Glossary of photographic terms
These are some photographic terms used in The Panorama Factory. We
intend that these terms be used with their conventional meaning.
Be
sure you have good translations of these terms before beginning to translate
the string table.

35mm camera noun
a camera using 35mm wide film
35mm equivalent focal length noun
a way to describe the focal length of a camera by stating the focal
length of a 35mm camera that produces the same field of view
APS camera noun
Advanced Photo System camera having a
different film size and therefore different field of view from a 35mm camera
for the same focal length
barrel distortion noun
a type of image distortion in a rectilinear projection where scale increases
with increasing distance from the center of the image.
brightness falloff noun
a gradual reduction in image brightness with increasing distance from the
center of the image.

digital camera noun
a camera using a digital sensor instead of film
digital SLR noun
a digital singlle-lens reflex camera, usually having
interchangeable lenses
equirectangular projection noun

exposure noun
the amount of light reaching the imaging surface (film or digital sensor).
focal length noun
distance from center of projection to the imaging surface (film or
digital sensor); an inherent attribute of a camera's lens
focal length multiplier noun
a multiplicative factor that relates the focal length of a camera to the
focal length of a 35mm camera that produces the same field of view
HFOV noun
horizontal field of view, usually expressed in degrees
pixel noun
a single dot in a digital image
rectilinear projection noun
the projection produced by a conventional camera; also called gnomic
projection, see

rotational camera noun
a type of panoramic camera in which the entire camera rotates as the
film is pulled through the camera, painting the image through a slit onto a
curved film plane and producing a cylindrical projection
sensor noun
light sensitive device that captures a digital image
swing lens camera noun
a type of panoramic camera in which the lens rotates from side to side,
painting the image through a slit onto a curved film plane and producing a
cylindrical projection
telephoto converter, tele converter noun
an adaptor that increases the focal length of another lens, decreasing
the field of view
VFOV noun
vertical field of view, usually expressed in degrees
wide angle converter noun
an adaptor that reduces the focal length of another lens, increasing the
field of view
