Glossary of terms specific to The Panorama Factory

These are terms used in The Panorama Factory in a specialized way.  We intend to use these terms in ways that are compatible with their conventional meaning, but in some cases they are used in a more specialized or otherwise idiosyncratic way.  The meanings of these terms are listed to help you choose appropriate translations.

Be sure you have good translations of these terms before beginning to translate the string table.  Please contact support@panoramafactory.com if you need clarification of an English term.


360 degree panorama noun
a panoramic image covering exactly 360 degrees of HFOV

accessory lens noun
a wide angle converter or telephoto converter

align verb
to adjust the offset between a pair of images so that they match correctly.

alignable adjective
able to be aligned <alignable image>.

aligning noun
the act of adjusting the offset between a pair of images so that they match correctly.

Alignment properties
name of the dialog box containing settings to control automatic alignment.

approve verb
to accept or OK an interactive image processing operations such as sharpening, cropping, etc.

APS classic print noun
an APS image produced when the camera is  set to record a  25mm x 17mm image on the film

APS film scan noun
a full frame scan of a film image produced by an APS camera; 30mm x 17mm

APS hdtv print noun
an APS image produced when the camera is set to record a 30mm x 17mm image on the film

APS panoramic print noun
an APS image produced when the camera is  set to record a  30mm x 10mm image on the film

archive noun
a project where calculated images are usually represented only by recipes

array verb
to create a new image by arranging a set of images in a horizontal or vertical sequence optionally separated by white space

array noun
a horizontal or vertical sequence of images, optionally separated by white space

Array of images
name of the dialog box for controlling an arraying operation

arrayed  adjective
resulting from an arraying operation <arrayed image>

arraying  noun
the act of creating an arrayed image

barrel distortion correction, barrel correction noun
adjustments to the shape of a conventional image to eliminate barrel distortion.

black level noun
the numeric pixel value in a digital image that represents black

blend verb
to combine the overlapping parts of one or more pairs of adjacent alignable images, making a smooth transition from one image to the next in the stitched image; contast with compare

Blending properties
name of the dialog box containing settings to control blending.

brightness falloff correction noun
see falloff correction.

Camera properties
name of the dialog box containing settings describing a camera.

camera rotation  noun
Lateral tilt (roll axis; side to side) or frontal tilt (pitch axis; front to back) of the camera.  See the sections Roll angle and Pitch angle of the web page Setting up your camera for pictures of camera rotation.

cap  noun
an image or color used to fill the area above a panoramic image so that its vertical field of view reaches the zenith (north pole) or nadir (south pole) <top cap> <bottom cap>

clear fine tuning verb
to remove the fine tuning of one or more pairs of images, returning them to their original state prior to fine tuning.

color correction noun
adjustments to the colors in the images as controlled by the color tool.

Color tool
name of the dialog box controlling color correction.

compare verb
to combine the overlapping parts of a pair of alignable images by showing 50% gray for parts that are equal and brighter or darker values in proportion to the difference in color between the images; contrast with blend

corner noun
see trimming corner

crop verb
to create one image from another by removing the left, right, top and/or bottom edges.

Crop image
name of the dialog box controlling image cropping.

cropped adjective
resulting from a cropping operation <cropped image>.

cropping noun
the act of creating a cropped image

cropping rectangle noun
a rectangular image decoration whose size and angle can be controlled; see Working with image decorations

cylindrical projection noun

decimate verb
to reduce the sampling resolution of an image.

decoration, image decoration noun
a figure drawn on an image with thin lines

detect verb
to optimize the value of a variable, without having any specific initial value <automatically detect focal length>; contrast with refine

document stitching noun
the act of creating a stitched image from individual sections of a larger document that were scanned on a flatbed scanner.  Individual images are rotated if necessary but not otherwise warped.

drag verb
to move an item on the screen by moving the mouse while holding the mouse button down.

draw verb
to copy the non-overlapped portion of an alignable image into the stitched image.

drawing noun
the act of copying the non-overlapped portion of an alignable image into the stitched image.

enhance verb
to create one image from another by apply a filtering operation, usually a sharpening filter; contrast with improve quality

enhanced adjective
resulting from an enhancing operation <enhanced image>.

enhancing noun
the act of creating an enhanced image

exposure correction noun
adjustments to the overall brightness and contrast of the stitched image to achieve a pleasing range from dark to light.

exposure matching noun
adjustments made to the overall brightness of one or both overlapping alignable images so that their brightnesses match well in the overlapping region.

falloff correction noun
increasing the brightness in the corners of an image to eliminate brightness falloff.

Filter control
name of the dialog box containing settings to control image enhancement.

filter kernel noun
a convolution kernel for producing an enhanced image

fine tune, fine tune image alignment verb
to make small scale, localized adjustments to the alignment between one or more pairs of images in order to minimize the differences in the overlapping parts of the images; contrast with refine

fine tuning verb
the act of making small scale, localized adjustments to the alignment between one or more pairs of images in order to minimize the differences in the overlapping parts of the images; contrast with refining

Fine tuning properties
name of the dialog box containing settings to control fine tuning.

fixed size rectangle noun
a rectangular image decoration whose size cannot be changed; see Working with image decorations

frontal tilt  noun
Front to back rotation of the camera (pitch axis).  See the section Pitch angle of the web page Setting up your camera for a picture of frontal tilt.

Histogram
name of the dialog box showing the number of pixels containing each color value from 0 to maximum.

hotspot noun
an area within an image that does something when you click on it with the mouse.

Hotspot properties
name of the dialog box containing properties of the selected hotspot.

Image properties
name of the dialog box containing properties of the current image.

import verb
to read an image file into the project.

Import Images
name of the dialog box for selecting images to be imported.

imported adjective
resulting from an importing operation <imported image>.

importing noun
the act of reading an image into the project

improve quality verb
to create a destination image that results from a series of image processing operations (trimming, warping, cropping, etc.) in a single generation in order to minimize generational image degradation; contrast with enhance

lateral tilt  noun
Side to side camera rotation (roll axis).  See the section Roll angle of the web page Setting up your camera for a picture of lateral tilt.

License and Registration information
name of the dialog box containing registration information.

low res size noun
 

midrange noun
the middle brightness range between the black level and the white level of an image

monochrome adjective
made with shades of gray <monochrome image>

normalize verb
to adjust the filter kernel so that it does not change the overall brightness of the image

Notes for %1 image
name of the dialog box containing the title and description of the current image; %1 is replaced by an adjective form of an image type <Notes for enhanced image>

Overlap region
name of the dialog box controlling tasks to perform on the overlap between one alignable image and the next.

Page setup
name of the dialog box controlling page setting for printing.

partial panorama noun
a panoramic image covering less than 360 degrees of HFOV

perspective projection noun
also called rectilinear projection and gnomonic projection, the conventional image format produced by an ordinary camera, see http://mathworld.wolfram.com/GnomonicProjection.html.

photo stitching noun
the act of creating a stitched image from individual photographs that are made from a single vantage point.  Individual images are rotated and warped in order to make them match smoothly.

preview verb
to display a web page template or a thumbnail index template using placeholders for the image, the image title and the image description <preview in browser>; contrast with view

profile noun
a named collection of settings for different parts of the program.

Profile organizer
name of the dialog box for managing profiles.

project noun
a collection of images and image recipes, usually for creating a panoramic image

Project notes
name of the dialog box containing the title and description of the current project.

Project properties
name of the dialog box containing properties of the current project.

reblend verb
to repeat the blending of an image that has previously been blended.

recipe noun
instructions for creating an image or a set of images from one or more source images

refine verb
to optimize the value of a variable, starting from some initial value <refine barrel correction>; contrast with fine tune and detect

refining noun
the act of optimizing the value of a variable, starting from some initial value; contrast with fine tuning

register verb
to enter a registration key, previously purchased from Smoky City Design, on the License and Registration dialog box.

registration mark noun
small marks drawn in the margins of a printed page to help to help align multiple page panoramas

resample verb
to increase the sampling resolution of an image.

resize verb
to create one image from another by changing the width and/or height as measured in pixels.

resized adjective
resulting from a resizing operation <resized image>.

resizing noun
the act of creating a resized image

resolution noun
density of pixels in an image, usually expressed in pixels per inch or pixels per centimeter

Resize image
name of the dialog box for controlling the size of a resized image.

restitch verb
to repeat the stitching of an image that has previously been stitched.

rotate verb
to create one image from another by rotation

Rotate image
name of the dialog box for controlling image rotation

rotated  adjective
resulting from a rotation operation <rotated image>

rotating noun
the act of creating a rotated image

saturation noun
chromatic purity; freedom from dilution with white

Save Archive
name of the dialog box for selecting the file in which to store a project archive.

Save Image As
name of the dialog box for selecting the file in which to store the current image.

search range noun
 

separable adjective
capable of being separated into a horizontal filter followed by a vertical filter <separable filter>

sharpen verb
to create one image from another in a way that accentuates edges, usually with an enhancing filter.

sharpened adjective
resulting from an sharpening operation <sharpened image>.

sharpening noun
the act of creating a sharpened image

spherical projection noun
also called equirectangular projection, see http://mathworld.wolfram.com/EquirectangularProjection.html

stitch verb
to warp, align, fine tune and blend a series of alignable images into a complete panoramic image.

stitched adjective
resulting from a stitching operations <stitched image>

stitching noun
the act of creating a stitched image; see also photo stitching and document stitching

stitching point noun
a specific, marked position on one image and the corresponding specific, marked position on the overlapping image used by semi-automatic or manual stitching method to determine camera frontal tilt, lateral tilt, focal length, barrel correction and image-to-image alignment.

target noun
the frame in which to open a new web page;  see the Hotspot properties dialog box

template noun
a web page that functions as a prototype for creating other web pages

thumbnail noun
a small image used as a representation of the full image, also <thumbnail image>, also <cropped thumbnail>.

thumbnail index noun
a web page containing thumbnail images

Thumbnail index properties
name of the dialog box containing information about a thumbnail index web page.

tile noun
a small rectangular decoration used to fine tune the image alignment; see Working with image decorations

trim verb
to extract the required part of an imported image in order to prepare it for stitching.

Trim imported image
name of the dialog box controlling image trimming.

trimmed adjective
resulting from a trimming operation <trimmed image>.

trimming noun
the act of creating a trimmed image

trimming corner, corner noun
an image decoration used to mark the corners of the portion of an imported image to retain when trimming; see Working with image decorations

Trimming properties
name of the dialog box containing settings for image trimming.

update noun
a new version of software containing bug corrections or relatively minor improvements, usually without a fee to current customers.

upgrade noun
major improvements to the software, usually with a fee for current customers that is less than the price of the software.

view verb
to display an image on screen <view in browser>; contrast with preview

white level noun
the numeric pixel value in a digital image that represents white

warp verb
to change the shape of an image so that it may be smoothly aligned with the adjacent image or images.

warped adjective
resulting from a warping operation <warped image>.

warping noun
the act of creating a warped image

watermark noun
a visible mark applied to an image in order to mark it as having been produced by an unregistered copy of The Panorama Factory.
