Meta keys (SHIFT, CONTROL, ALT, COMMAND) sometimes do not work on a secondary Mac keyboard

Description

If your computer has two keyboards, sometimes the meta keys (SHIFT, CONTROL, ALT, COMMAND) on the second keyboard do not work properly. This is a problem particularly when you use an external keyboard on a laptop with the cover closed.

Examples of things that do not work properly:

COMMAND+SHIFT (500% zoom).

ALT key as a modifier for editing decorations.

SHIFT and/or COMMAND to modify selection of thumbnails and decorations.

Workaround

Use the primary keyboard.
