Bacopa monnieri is effective at reversing scopolamine induced amnesia. This was first seen in monkeys on the street.
Bacopa Monnieri (Punica granatum, P. acerifolia)
Bacopa Monnieri (Pisum sativum)
My favorite plant that I tried on my own, and had a hard time passing as 'nerf' to my friends. (I think that I'm using some sort of weird "liking" for some my favorite plants, I'm not sure)
I have tried the powder (which is not a substitute for the root extract), tea (which is also not a substitute for the root extract) and a decoction that is blend of both the powder and tea.
The results of tea are consistent, if slightly less potent. The root extract, however, is more tolerable, although still only effective in very small doses. The powder seems to be most helpful at higher dosage. I would say this is a very nice plant at price.
There are some people who can drink the tea straight. For some reason, I had difficulty getting the first three times that I tried this. It really seemed to work if I was drinking it by mixing the tea in water.
I have used this both on its own or in an infusion. The infusion, if you mix powder with an equal amount of water, is quite effective in reducing the memory loss. I had heard that the root extract, however, didn't work like this at lower dosages. That may be because this extract has an active ingredient which is different from that the leaf extract has. I'm not sure what it is, because I can't find it here in the US, although I heard that other sources state it is a substance called B6. This extract (or that part they think it has) has been reported to work as far I can tell at moderate dosages, however, the extract used at high dose levels is not effective, as there no evidence that it is responsible for the action of root extract at all. (I would also think that there is some unknown component in the extract which is responsible for the amneffects, but I haven't found that either).
I do think this is one of the stronger treatments I have found that is worth using in small doses. It does have downsides, however. People who are very sensitive, or have the stomach problems which I assume are common with this plant, may be extremely sensitive, so I would just wait until one of those other herbs has some effect before using bacopa monnieri.
My only concern, and perhaps somewhat of a nitpick, is the issue of dosage. I have read that the doses you take for memory enhancement can be quite high, sometimes as high a hundred milligrams day. On an empty stomach, this might seem dangerous, or something that I could handle, but with a bit of food in me it seems to have no apparent ill effects. That's not such an issue though, because I don't know how many plants I have to take this keep from getting nauseous if I get the right combination of plants, although if I do, wouldn't try it without first reading the dosage in a different place. It's possible that the dose I was taking probably too high to be a safe dosage anyway.
I do feel that if one is going to go down this route for memory enhancement, it might well be better that one had some other herb with them that could complement their experience while they were out. But you can't keep doing this every morning. Just because you can feel a noticeable improvement one day doesn't mean that the next day is going to have the same effects. That said, if you feel some improvement, then take more and until you feel a noticeable deterioration (for me, that meant a 50% decline in IQ after only 1 cup). So don't take bacopa monnieri if you don't feel like you're making any impact on your memory.
