Trouble
report 543
Creation of 8.3 filename aliases
was disabled on your computer system when the C:\Program Files\Smoky City
Design\The Panorama Factory V4 folder was created
Versions affected
All versions if any version was installed with 8.3
filenames disabled.
Description of the problem
This problem occurs only on some computer systems. When you
attempt to install V4.1 or later, you receive this error message:
Creation of 8.3 filename
aliases was disabled on your computer system when the C:\Program
Files\Smoky City Design\The Panorama Factory V4 folder was created. The
Panorama Factory V4 cannot be installed until this is corrected. Please
contact support@panoramafactory.com for assistance.
What causes the problem
The following describes what we believe causes this problem:
-
You originally installed
The Panorama Factory while creation
of 8.3 filename aliases was disabled. Please refer to
Trouble report 494
Installed application doesn't run, can't uninstall, "Could not open
INSTALL.LOG" for more background on this problem.
-
After installing The
Panorama Factory, you enabled creation
of 8.3 filename aliases. You may have enabled it during an attempt
to install V4.1 or later (starting
with V4.1, the setup program offers to enable it).
-
You run the V4.1 (or
later) setup program
and receive the error message:
Creation of 8.3 filename
aliases was disabled on your computer system when the C:\Program
Files\Smoky City Design\The Panorama Factory V4 folder was created. The
Panorama Factory V4 cannot be installed until this is corrected. Please
contact support@panoramafactory.com for assistance.
Enabling 8.3 filename aliases is a good step,
but it does not correct folder names that already exist on your
computer. The Panorama Factory's folder names must be repaired in
order for the install to work properly.
Workaround
To work around this problem, you should
follow these steps.
- Backup any files that you have created
yourself (not through the setup program) in The Panorama
Factory's application folder. These files might
include custom web page templates or VR
viewers (e.g. PTViewer). If
you have not created any files, skip this step.
The Panorama
Factory's application folder is normally:
C:\Program Files\Smoky City Design\The
Panorama Factory
--or--
C:\Program Files\Smoky City Design\The
Panorama Factory V4
If you have installed multiple versions of The
Panorama Factory (e.g. V3.x and V4.x)
there may be multiple application folders on your computer.
- Remove the application files for The Panorama Factory that were
created by the failed install:
- Using the right hand mouse button, click the Windows Start menu
(lower left corner of your desktop).
- Select Explore from the popup menu.
- Double-click the C: folder, then Program Files.
- Single-click the Smoky City Design folder.
- Press the Delete (or Del) key on your keyboard to delete the
folder.
-
Reinstall the Legacy
Edition of The Panorama Factory V4. This is an essential step
to correct the problem. You must reinstall the Legacy Edition
even if you eventually want to install a different edition such as
the m32 Edition. Reinstalling the Legacy Edition is the step
that finally corrects the problem. To
download the Legacy Edition, visit The Panorama Factory Editions.
-
If The Panorama Factory
V3.x was installed on your computer prior to starting this workaround,
you must reinstall it now.
Again, this is an essential step to correct the
problem. To obtain the setup program for
V3.x, please write to support@panoramafactory.com.
-
Restore the files you
backed up in step #1. You may need to reinstall PTViewer in The
Panorama Factory's application folder.
-
Finally, if you want to run
The Panorama Factory m32 Edition, you should install it now. The
installation of The Panorama Factory m32 Edition will remove the Legacy
Edition that you installed in step #3.
Status
Please use the workaround to correct the folder structure of your
computer.
