When Johann and I worked on the original translation, we settled on specific german terms to be used for certain english terms in The Panorama Factory. This work was done before the english glossaries were prepared, so there is no formal german-english dictionary for The Panorama Factory. See Glossary of terms specific to The Panorama Factory and Glossary of photographic terms for the english glossaries. These are some of the translations we decided upon:
English | German | Definition | align | ausrichten | verb. to adjust the offset between a pair of images so that they match correctly | fine tune or fine tune alignment | feinausrichten or ausrichtung feinanpassen | verb. to make small scale, localized adjustments to the alignment between one or more pairs of images in order to minimize the differences in the overlapping parts of the images; contrast with refine | refine | anpassen | verb. to optimize the value of a variable, starting from some initial value <refine focal length, barrel correction or falloff correction>; contrast with fine tune and detect | detect | automatisch anpassen | verb. to optimize the value of a variable, without having any specific initial value <automatically detect focal length, barrel correction or falloff correction>; contrast with refine | I have several questions. 1. I am not sure we have been completely consistent in the usage of these terms. If you become aware of inconsistencies, please point them out. 2. One of the reviewers suggested that "feinanpassen" should be "fein anpassen". Should this change be made in all cases or does it depend upon the usage? 3. Should "feinausrichten" be changed to "fein ausrichten" in some or all cases? 4. In string number 320, should "Brennweitenfeinabstimmung" be changed to Brennweitenfeinanpassung"? |

3. I think "feinausrichten" is ok. 4. I think "Brennweitenfeinanpassung" is ok |

2. IMHO "feinanpassen" could a noun that describes the action, or could be a verb, whereas "fein anpassen" feels to me more like a sentence fragment with an adverb and a verb in it, and feels to me like it cannot be used in a noun position, so unfortunately the context will determine whether the change is advisable. I think using the former for now is acceptable. We can "fine tune" ;-) this later if others feel strongly about the need to change this in some of the contexts. 3. Looking just at "feinausrichten" and "fein ausrichten" in isolation, I'd prefer the former, but the latter could work in some contexts - see the response to question 2. My advice is again to use the former for now, as it is not IMHO incorrect. 4. The English term is "focal length refinement". This is not just "focal length adjustment" (Brennweitenanpassung) or "fine adjustment of focal length" (Brennweitenfeinanpassung) but connotes a process which improves the value over time. So between the two, I'd prefer "Brennweitenfeinabstimmung". Admittedly the term "Brennweitenfeinanpassung" is probably also acceptable in this context, as this is a subtle point which may not make a difference for this specific string. Now that I think about it, "Brennweitenverfeinerung" or (space permitting) "verfeinerung der Brennweite" would be a more correct, literal translation of the English term.

4. Most of the places that refer to "focal length refinement" or "automatic focal length detection" currently use "anpassen". If we accept Johann's suggestion to use "abstimmung" or "verfeinerung" for the focal length refinement and detection, we'll need to change many of the strings that currently mention "Brennweite". I did a quick review, and found two occurrences of "Brennweitenkorrektur", which is wrong no matter what we decide. They should probably both be changed to whatever we choose for the translation of "focal length refinement". |
