Hi John - Over the past year plus I have become even more amazed at the things I can do in PF! Its like each time I sit down at a new session I discover something new that I didn't know about! Marvelous program! This time my question regards what happens with input JPEG files of varying compression ratios. I have begun to use the SHQ setting on my Olympus C4040 and have discovered that the less compression makes a significantly better image. I shot the same series of images in HQ and SHQ mode - meaning of course that the SHQ images had greater detail and should have made a better panorama. I used PF to print panoramas with both sets of images in the different compression ratios and it seems to me that the resulting panoramas did NOT reflect the different compression ratios of the input files? First, was I mistaken in my perception? Does PF create a panorama that reflects the greater detail from input JPEG's with less compression loss? Or does PF make some kind of an adjustment that minimizes or offsets the superior detail of JPEG images with less compression? If the latter is true, is there something that I can do, like shoot all TIF's to go into PF, to pass superior detail from an original series of images through to a PF output panorama? Thanks John. |

The results produced by The Panorama Factory will benefit from improved image quality in the original images. However, if you save your final image as a JPG, this improved quality may or may not appear in the saved image. Versions of The Panorama Factory up to and including V2.4 do not provide a control over the compression ratio when saving JPG images. This capability will be added in a future version. Until then, if you are unsatisfied with the saved image quality, your best bet is to save your images as TIF files. Using TIF for the original image files may also help if you are losing some image quality in the original JPGs. |
