I downloaded the trial version and tried to stitch a sequence taken with a Nikon D1 and a 14mm aspherical lens (~24mm lens at 35mm format equivalent) with no success at all. Not even close. Is it at all possible to stitch images taken with aspherical lenses? |

Whether the lens is aspherical is probably not the issue. Aspherical elements are used in lens design to improve the optical quality of the lens system by reducing "spherical aberration." A spherical lens does not focus parallel rays to a point, but rather along a line. This leads to unsharp pictures with larger lens apertures, even when the lens is correctly focussed. Sometimes lens designers include aspherical elements to correct this problem. It is more likely that your inability to stitch is caused by geometric distortions introduced by the lens. Some wide angle converters for digital cameras introduce "barrel distortion." This is an effect in which straight lines are imaged as curves that bow out from the center. See barrel distortion at http://www.dpreview.com for a sample image showing barrel distortion. The Panorama Factory can cope with a certain amount of geometric distortion, but some users have reported difficulties like the one you describe when they use wide angle converters. Just a reminder: Please include an email address when you post a FAQ question, particularly one that relates to a specific situation like this one. Without an email address I cannot request additional information. For example, by requesting a copy of the images that failed to stitch I could confirm the cause of this problem. |

John, thanks for the answer. I learned that my problem is probably parallax and the camera angle, but I am glad to hear that aspherical lenses are not an issue in stitching panoramas. - The Nikon D1 is a full blown professional digital SLR camera and does not need converters. - I will try to get hold of a panorama head and repeat the test. |
