I'll try to figure this out if I can.

I'd like to ask you to send me the following information:

1. If it does not already exist, make a folder in C:\ called "temp". Make the folder immediately inside C:, not in a sub-folder. In other words, the folder will be C:\temp. If the folder already exists, that's OK too.

2. Run PF and try to create an MOV file.

3. Look in C:\temp for a file called "pflog.txt" and email it to support@panoramafactory.com.

If C:\temp exists, The Panorama Factory creates pflog.txt and adds error messages to it during MOV file creation. This is a QuickTime debug feature in The Panorama Factory.

Hopefully this file will give us a little more information about what is going wrong.

Thanks, I have received the file. I will analyze it to see whether it can point me in the right direction. I ask for your patience, though. Because this is a holiday weekend, it may take a few extra days for me to get back to you.

Hi, I sent this yesterday in reply to your email message (to support @ panoramafactory.com), but perhaps I should have posted it here also.

Thanks for sending the file. And Happy New Year!

The error you are receiving, -43, indicates that QuickTime was unable to open the named file. (The Panorama Factory uses the QuickTime DLLs from Apple to create MOV files.)

I noticed that the folder name of this file has some unusual letters in it: "ùú". I think perhaps our customer support software has corrupted these letters. We use a commercial customer support system to track customer emails, but it does not always properly handle extended characters. (I wish we could afford a better system, but this is a very small company, just one full time person, myself, and one part time person.)

It would be helpful to get some specific information about your machine configuration. Please follow the directions at:
http://www.panoramafactory.com/pfinfo.html

Please send the file as an email attachment, not by cut-and-paste into the email message. That way we can be sure the customer support system will not affect its contents.

Thanks for sending the PFInfo file.

Yes, I suspected it was something like that. It is possible that PF's QuickTime support has difficulty with extended characters (ASCII>127) under some circumstances. I have corrected some problems (with hotspot names, for example) in the past, but perhaps some problems still exist.

At first I thought it might habe caused by the extended characters in the folder name of the windows TEMP folder on your system. PF writes intermediate images to the TEMP folder when making a QuickTime move. However, I have tried that on my own system and does not seem to cause a problem.

I want to solve this problem but it may take a little while. I will let you know if I need more information.

Sorry for the very long delay in responding to the most recent message. This problem turned out to be pretty obscure and it was a challenge to identify the circumstances in which it happens.

Explanation of the problem

This problem involves the use of extended characters in folder names. However, not all extended characters seem to cause problems. For example, the German umlaut characters seem to be OK. I have not been able to find out why some extended characters work and others do not.

It appears to be a problem that occurs within the QuickTime DLLs from Apple. (The Panorama Factory uses the Apple DLLs to build MOV files.) Perhaps it is because the Mac character set is used internally in the Apple DLLs.

In your situation, the problematic folder is the Windows temp folder. The Panorama Factory writes intermediate files to the Windows temp folder and then passes their file names to the QuickTime DLLs. It is at this point that you receive the error message.

On your system, the temp folder has Greek letters in it, something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\ÅëëçíéêÞ ãëþóóá\Local Settings\Temp
(Notice that the Greek letters are in an intermediate folder name in the path. They will cause problems in any folder name that appears in the file path.)

A little-known feature of Windows is that all files have two file names: (1) the normal file name you see in Windows Explorer; and (2) an 8.3 ("8 dot 3") file name. The 8.3 file name is supposed to conform to DOS file naming. It never has more than 8 characters before or more than 3 after the dot, and has no extended characters.

However, for reasons I do not understand, Windows put extended characters in the 8.3 file name of your temp folder:
C:\DOCUME~1\ùúDB50~1\LOCALS~1\Temp
This is the name referenced your error message:
In VRPano_MakePanorama,
GetGraphicsImporterForFile.1(C:\DOCUME~1\ùúDB50~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\qtvr4.tif)
returned error -43

Suggested workaround

I suggest that you make a new folder that does not have any special characters in the file name. Then set the Windows environment variables to reference that folder instead of the default folder. Here are step-by-step instructions:
  1. Create a new folder. To be safe, I recommend you use only basic Latin characters. For example, C:\Temp.
  2. Click the Windows Start menu (usually located in the lower left hand corner of the desktop). Then right-click My Computer and select Properties from the popup menu. The System Properties dialog box will appear.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. Select the Environment Variables button. The Environment Variables dialog box will appear.
  5. In the top box labeled User variables, double-click the line starting with TEMP. Change the Variable value to C:\Temp and then click OK.
  6. Repeat the previous step for the line starting with TMP. (You must change both TEMP and TMP.)
  7. Click OK on the Environment Variables dialog box.
  8. Click OK on the System Properties dialog box.
I think this should correct the error you are receiving.

But, also, be careful when you save the MOV file. You will probably also receive an error (maybe a different number) if you try to save the MOV file to a folder with extended characters in its name. Be sure to save your MOV file to a folder that just has Latin characters in its full path name.

The future

I don't have a better correction for this problem yet. Perhaps I will be able to make a change in a future version of The Panorama Factory that will eliminate this problem. But until then, I think the suggested workaround should solve the problem for you.
