There are no specific limits in The Panorama Factory on the number of pictures. However, there may be limits imposed by the amount of memory on your computer or by other limits in Windows itself.

I have never tried to work with so many pictures, so I had to try it for myself. I was able to successfully create a panorama from 1100 pictures, each 256 by 256 by 8 bits per color (RGB). I started with a 9-picture panorama but repeated the set of images over and over again until I had 1100 pictures. I used 1100 pictures so that I would be 10% over your number.

I ran into a couple of small problems, but there are simple workarounds for them.

Importing images

For some reason, I could not import all of the images at one time. The Import dialog box seems to have a limit on the number of images. I could not import more than about 900 pictures at once. This may be some sort of Windows limit, but I am not sure. Fortunately, there is a simple workaround for this problem. Either:

1. Drag-and-drop the pictures from a Windows File Explorer into The Panorama Factory. This worked for me with all 1100 pictures at one time.

--or--

2. Import the pictures in groups of 900 or less. For example, choose the Import command (using the menu or the button), select pictures 1 to 500 and click OK. Then choose the Import command again, select pictures 501 to 1000 and click OK.

Scrolling thumbnail display

There appears to be a bug in the scrolling thumbnail display. Moving the scroller only shows about the first 340 thumbnails. All of the images are there, but after around 340, it jumps back to the beginning.

If you need to see all of the thumbnails, you should reduce the displayed size of the thumbnails. To set the size of the thumbnails, go to the Thumbnails tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu). For 1000 pictures, you'll need to reduce the Width setting for Imported thumbnail size to 20.

You should not have to change the Computed thumbnail size because you will normally only have a few thumbnails in the computed list (the upper thumbnail display).

But even if you do not change the thumbnail size, all the images are there even if you cannot see them.

Memory usage

When I stitched 1100 images, each 256 by 256, the final image was about 200,000 pixels wide and was about 200 megabytes. I was able to complete this image on an ordinary 32-bit Pentium running Windows XP.

However, if you run into memory problems, you may need to follow some, or all, of the advice in these FAQ articles:

Increase swap file size for Windows NT, 2000 and XP
Increase the virtual memory available under Windows

Automatic exposure matching and exposure correction

With 1100 pictures, I found the results from automatic exposure matching to be unsatisfactory. This is because small exposure differences accumulated over the entire set of pictures. By the end of the image, the exposure change was too extreme.

Automatic exposure correction might still be useful, but in some situations you may need to disable both options.

For more information about these options, read Controlling automatic exposure correction.

Final thoughts

Your images are probably very much different from mine. If you encounter additional problems, please either post again in this message thread or send an email to support @ panoramafactory.com. The second option may be better because we can enter into an email conversation if I need to request specific information about your pictures.

By the way, if you don't mind explaining, I'm interested to know more about your application. I'm having trouble imagining what situation would create a linear panorama of 1000 overlapping pictures.
