I am currently evaluating Panorama Factory and really appreciate some of its abilities. One of the challenges that I am facing though (perhaps ignorance on my part) is support vor Quicktime 7.xx. When I recently purchased an iPod my version of Quicktime was upgraded to 7.04 (for Windows XP). I no longer appear to have the authoring abilities I did before.

According to the help manual:

C:\Program Files\Smoky City Design\The Panorama Factory V4\help\help.html

...you must run the QuickTime Updater to add the QuickTime components...

Following the directions on this page, these options are not available (perhaps an update to the manual is required).

It states that you must have the following installed:

QuickTime Essentials
QuickTime Internet Extras
QuickTime Still Image
QuickTime Authoring

Searching Apples site, I can not find any of these components. There is 3rd party authoring, but nothing specifically from Apple.

Please note, I am evaluating Panorama Factory to replace Photostitch, because of the same issue. If I un-install 7.04 and install Quicktime 6.5x everything seems to be OK, but then my iPod does not work!

Please help me find a solution, Panorama Factory seems to offer so many features, but without support for QTVR seems like it may not be the answer.

Please advise,

David

Hi David,

I am pretty certain that The Panorama Factory works properly with QuickTime 7. I think, as you suggested, that The Panorama Factory's manual just needs to be updated.

I have tested The Panorama Factory using "QuickTime 7 with iTunes" which is the version of the free player currently available for download from Apple.com. As far as I have been able to determine, the default installation of QuickTime 7 includes all components that are required by The Panorama Factory. It does not display any messages about missing components and is able to correctly create MOV files.

It appears that QuickTime 7 no longer offers options about which components to install. Apparently it always performs a full install.

I tested QuickTime 7 on a computer that has never had QuickTime installed. I also tested it on a computer where I upgraded from QuickTime 6.5.2. On both systems, The Panorama Factory was able to create MOV files without problems.

If you are unable to create MOV files from The Panorama Factory with QuickTime 7, I suggest you contact support@panoramafactory.com so that we can open a customer support ticket on this problem. In this situation, we would probably need to request additional information about your computer system and this is best handled through email support.

After doing an un-install and a re-install of Quicktime 7.xx, I have been able to successfully create a QTVR. Thank you so much for your help.

Here's a Quicktime idea, although kinda complex.

It assumes that a person has one of the new "video" iPods, and deals with converting a Panorama Factory QTVR "tour" into a movie, playable on the ipod.

First, make the "tour" of a house, say, using PF's ability to create such a tour. Then use Camtasia (or some other screen-capture-into-movie" tool, which would let you make a 320x240 .avi movie of your "tour" through the house, with your audio narration of the tour. Then use Quicktime Pro (maybe $25, from Apple), to turn that .avi into a movie which can be played on the ipod.

The end result would be an spoken-word, narrated (or you could use background musuc?) movie of a house tour (or museum tour, or battlefield tour, whatever), that could be paused and restarted, and controlled just like any other ipod movie/music. There wouldn't be "hotspots" on the ipod movie, but you could make each room a different "track," if desired.

This would be "tour" movies on the (relatively)cheap, since it's only dig photos, P'Factory, Camtasia, and Quicktime Pro. Would this be useful for real estate, museums, national monuments, etc??

The original poster was able to resolve the problem by un-installing and re-installing Quicktime 7. Have you already tried this?

Also, are you running the latest version of The Panorama Factory or an older version?

The Panorama Factory V4 works properly with QuickTIme 7 in our own testing. If you cannot resolve the problem by un-installing and re-installing Quicktime 7, please contact support@panoramafactory.com. For individual attention to specific problems, it's usually best to contact customer support directly so that we can enter into an email dialog about the problem.

After re-installing Quicktime 7, I have had very good luck with Panoramafactory and really enjoy it. I hope you are able to resolve your issue per John's directions and use the program. Good Luck!
