If you use Windows NT, you may need to increase the maximum size of your swap file. You use the Performance tab of the System control panel item to set virtual memory settings. For large projects you may need to set this as large as 2 or 3 GB (2000 or 3000 MB).

This change is unnecessary for Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME if you let Windows manage your virtual memory settings (the default setting).

For Windows Vista:

1. Click the Windows logo (usually located in the lower left hand corner of the screen) to open the Windows Start menu. Right-click Computer (usually in the right hand column of the start menu) and choose Properties. The System item of the Control Panel opens in a window.
2. Choose Advanced System Settings. Windows may display a dialog box saying "Windows needs your permission to continue". Enter an administrator password if requested and then click OK or Continue. The System Properties dialog box displays.
3. Select the Advanced tab on the System Properties dialog.
4. Click the Settings button in the Performance box.
5. Select the Advanced tab on the Performance Options dialog.
6. Click the Change button in the Virtual Memory box.
7. Remove the checkmark from the box labeled "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" and then select the radio button labeled "Custom size."
8. Enter a large value into the Initial Size and Maximum Size texts field. We recommend setting the initial size equal to the maximum size.
9. Click Set.
10. Click OK on all the dialogs.

For large projects you may need to set this as large as 4 GB (4096 MB).
