I was flying in a hot air balloon earlier and I took the opportunity to try for making 360 panoramic and a couple others. However I found from a panoramic project that moving balloon + awkward angle - tripod = hour to manually stitch!

Very few ghosting from the first couple and last couple pictures. This is of the railroad that runs parallel to Silver Lake Rd. near Fenton, Michigan. The freeway at the right side is US-23.
However making 360 is another story. I was able to make one full panoramic image but I can't do a true 360 because apparently the balloon moves so much that the first and last picture don't line up enough that PF4 can complete. I tried manual stitching but after 36 points with no colored dots, I gave up, went back, and set it as partial rather than 360. If I printed it out I can probably wrap the image around to complete 360.
This is what I did as far as taking picture: First I set the camera in manual mode, focus to infinity, and ISO 100 to get even images. Then I started in the direction the balloon was moving, rotated, and tried to overlap images by about 50%. I used the visual guide on the LCD to keep the horizon even and centered while avoiding the balloon basket support or the pilot and passengers in the balloon.
At about 1,000 feet in the air, the wasn't much of parallax issue but it still stumped PF4. The final image is a bit over 2MB total. Next time I'll see if I can dig up a small level indicator and tape em to my camera to get better leveling. |
